  • Wizards & Warrios problem (NES)

I'm trying to play a ROM of Wizards & Warriors on my JNES, and the picture is all frazzled and weird. I have a very new version of JNES so I'm not totally sure what the problem is. Anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

JNES is not the best emulator for NES, is nice, and has some interesting features, like an integrated cheat database, but is not so compatible like VirtuaNES or FCEultra, the best emulator for PC. VirtuaNES has been updated a couple of days ago. And then you also have Nestopia, that is based in the source of FCEultra. The last time JNES was updated was a couple of years ago, at least that says the page, and the emu wasn't like the ones i listed here. Try one of these, i recommend Virtuanes or FCEU, both are greats, but VNES has a more accurate sound emulation than FCEultra. The last time I used that game with these emus it worked perfect.

I like it because of how user-friendly it is, though. A lot of the other programs screw with your mouse cursor and make it hard to have any other programs open.

I'll try VirtuaNES, though. Does it have a cheat feature thats easy to use (i.e. you can turn codes off when you want and the program actually responds, and you can enter multi-part codes)? Got a link?

Well, VirtuaNES has a nice aim cursor when using the mouse in lasergun games. And don't have problems with other programs, it doesn't requiere too much CPU, i use it in my other pc and is a K6-2 550, i can run it at full speed with winamp open.
It has a nice cheat function, that lets you choose a hotkey to enable and disable codes without entering the menu.

Downloaded virtuaNES. It looks like the Zip file came with a few games -- Castlevania and Super Mario Bros (1). They're GEN file types and I can't get them to open in the emulator. I guess they're integrated Game Genie codes that come with the program as an example?

I can't get the code input to work. I go to the Cheat Code (Control+End), then hit the Input button and enter a code, hit OK, but nothing happens. The code doesn't appear on the blank list.

They're game genie codes, and i think they are in the package like an example of how to use them, like you said. FCEultra has a better way to hande gg, but for some ppl is a little more complicate to deal. I will take a look at the codes you previously asked later, i promise it.

              VirtuaNES rocks!

Editing VirtuaNES *.vct files (the format it uses to store ram cheats) is very easy. Also you can make you own *.gen files (game genie lists) with just a text editor. The cheat search engine is easier and more friendly than the one in FCE Ultra.
Try VirtuaNES it run almost all NES games. At the moment the only game I remember it cannot run very well is Battle Toads & Double Dragon. You can enable the cheats pressing insert and disable them pressing delete.
              Have fun!!!.

So basically I have to compile any cheat codes I want to use and then load them while I have the game open? How the hell do I do that? LOL

Nop, you can edit the vct file if you want with the notepad (or another text editor), but only if you want to. To add cheats you can add them pressing CTRL+END, that will bring up the cheat manager window, there you can add, edit, and delete the cheats.

VirtuaNES has a different way to hande codes. I will show how it works with a little example.
This is an Invincibility code i did for 1942: 00048E 88; now, that's the way the code is in the database. 048E:88 is how FCEultra (the latest versions) and other emulators use that code. 048E-01-88 is how you have to imput the code in VNES. So you have to add -01- between the address (048E) and the value (88). Once the code is added you have to at least have one triangle at the left of the code in green. It will tell the emu that the code is active. All red will tell the code is inactive.
If you want to know what is that -01-, it tells the emu the code is 1 byte.

So basically, whoever created VirtuaNES made it with computer programmers in mind, not the general gaming public. Because I didn't get any of that. I don't know how to create codes, and the only codes I ever created were Game Genie codes I tried at random till something worked, when I was a kid.

Next emulator. FCEultra is easier to use cheat codes with, right?

                        Thanks,

A lot easier, but it doesn't have the sound of VirtuaNES and it can be a little more tricky to configure, but it's far better than VirtuaNES.
VirtuaNES has this problem with Option > Game Options, in where the rendering is always in Scan 4 insteed of Tile, and that gives a lot of problem with graphics in games. If you made it in Tile the second scroll used in games to show status like lives and those things will work perfect, and graphics will not mess up. But you have to do it for each game. FCEultra doesn't have this problem.

I tried Wizards & Warriors on FCE Ultra, the picture gets all screwed up as soon as I go inside a tree.

I closed it out. When I try to open the ROM again I get an error message saying "error opening game genie rom image!"

...and now when I try to open it, its just a gray screen.

                              A corrupted rom image?

I tried Wizards & Warriors (U) (PRG0) [!] in both VirtuaNES andf FCEUltra.
It works fine with both of them. Maybe you rom image is corrupt. Search for another rom in the web.
As VisitntX say VirtuaNES has better sound. But FCEUltra has better compatibility. And the cheat engine of VirtuaNES isn't very difficult. Don't be lazy, try it .
                              Have Fun!.
