  • Sonic 3 & Knuckles Remastered Proof Of Concept For Mobile Devices

    By Cauterize

Two decades ago this week the Mega Drive was treated to the second part of Sonic The Hedgehog’s third appearance. With Sonic 3 bolted into the cartridge connector of Sonic & Knuckles, gamers could finally sample everything the title had to offer.

Despite its greatness, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the only title Sega are yet to remaster for touchscreen devices. Having said that though, the key developers behind the iOS and Android ports of the 16-bit titles have put together a proof of concept showing the missing part of the trilogy running on an iPhone.

Although this is anything but endorsed by Sega, everything that made the previous official remasterings so good is present in this proof of concept. Featuring a wider display of the various environment within the game, along with updated touch controls and crisp visuals, we’re left hoping that Sega’s watching.

To further celebrate Sonic & Knuckles 20th birthday, Christian "Taxman" Whitehead and Simon "Stealth" Thomley have given a more in depth background to this project in a recent blog post - something any fan of the series should take a look at.

Given that the game is built and ready (by the looks of it), don’t be surprised if Sega does in fact end up securing and releasing this updated port in the near future.
