Portable to retire this fiscal year, financial results suggest

By Andy Robinson for CVG UK

Nintendo said today that it expects to sell ten million additional DS software units during the current business year ending March 31, 2014, but it offered no guidance for hardware sales, simply leaving the forecast column blank.

Asked if this is indicative of plans to stop producing the hardware, a Nintendo UK representative would only offer the following statement: "Nintendo will continue to sell Nintendo DS Hardware but is not revealing a unit sales forecast at this time."

To date, the dual-screened portable has sold more than 153 million units, easily making it the firm's best selling console. Only the PlayStation 2 has sold more (155 million).

More than 933 million pieces of DS software have been sold since launch almost nine years ago.

New Super Mario Bros. is the portable's best selling title at 30 million units, followed by Nintendogs (23.9 million) and Mario Kart DS (23.3 million).

The DS was launched in 2004 in Japan and North America, followed by a European release in early 2005.

The handheld has seen three redesigns during its lifespan; the smaller Nintendo DS Lite, camera-enabled Nintendo DSi and the larger Nintendo DSi XL.

In 2011 Nintendo launched a successor handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. The platform holder revealed in its fiscal 2013 financial results this morning that 31 million 3DS units have been sold worldwide.

I Plan on getting back two games I sold due to stupidity: Super Mario 64 DS & New Super Mario Bros.

I got one a few weeks ago. A Matte Red one. They're well worth the cash in my opinion, they even have a web browser. Due to limited memory sometimes causes the browser to stop loading the page. One game I also MUST get is Chrono Trigger for it, never really liked turn-based combat games too much but this awesome game+music changed my mind about them. Good ol' SNES.

Just ordered a special edition Mario DS Lite.
The good news is that it was only 67 dollars, but the bad new is that it's refurbished.
I was about to just order the DSi from Walmart but I didn't like the fact that the GBA slot was removed.

DX has horrible shipping times to the US, but it's not like I was in a big hurry for it.

I ordered an SD Gecko from them(DX) & it took exactly three weeks for delivery. DX comes to the US by port at NY,
you will probably get your DS Lite sooner than I got my SD Gecko since your a bit closer to NY than me.

I miss my DS lite, The removal of the GBA slot was a bad idea.

It sucks to see my favorite handheld console die like this... I think I'm going to buy 1 of each DS before they're all gone.
I only bother with things that interest me.

It's my favorite handheld too! You know they will get pretty expensive after production ends, as with all Nintendo hardware/software. The reason they're stuff costs more is because of the quality, the best of the best.

Nintendo DS: 9 years, 50 must own games

As it nears the end of its life, we summarize the best games for Nintendo's dual-screened wonder.

Today's Nintendo financial results may tell a number of stories, but one that caught our eye was indication that Nintendo looks set to stop production of the DS, its most popular handheld ever.

By Chris Scullion for CVG UK

Looking way back to 2004 when the portable was first released, it's hard to believe that the handheld many predicted was doomed to be outsold by the vastly more powerful PSP would end up selling an enormous 153.87 million systems.

As the DS nears the end of its natural life, we've come up with our definitive list of the 50 greatest DS games you need to own. The more of these games you have in your library, the more complete a human being you are. Don't raise any objections with that - it's just science.

                        1. Mario Kart DS
Nintendo/Nintendo EAD Group 1/23.34 million sold

Despite kicking off one of the most heated debates in modern gaming - whether snaking is indeed cheating - Mario Kart DS remains one of the finest games in a much-loved series. It seems many DS owners agreed too, because the game ended up being the third-best selling game on the DS.

Where do you guys buy your games for that handheld? Like, where is the cheapest place? (I'm only talking about new games, not used games. I never buy anything used... I don't like people's grimy paws all over my possessions ) I'm assuming that new games are basically all the same price or is there one particular store or website that sells it for a little bit less than all the others? And when I say "new games", I don't necessarily mean games that have just been released. I mean games that have never been opened and are still sealed in their original packaging.

I think it's really time for me to finally get some kind of newer generation video game system. And since I don't own any handhelds, I thought it may be nice to. (Plus I'd be able to play the new Zelda... a very influential factor in my decision to buy this handheld)

And what version of this handheld would you guys recommend I buy?

DS Lite. They are hard to find new, though. You can use the Action Replay DS and the Datel Trainer Toolkit to hack codes for it.
