  • Original Game Boy

Three different Original Game Boy emulators have three different default colors. I want to know which emulator displays the real/true color for the Original Game Boy? I know it's not Gambatte's default color. It's either VBA-rr or BGB. I had an Original Game Boy once and I think I remember the color being BGB's default color. And why do three different emulators have 3 totally different default colors for the Original Game Boy? I have posted snapshots of the three emulators I am using:
    • VBA-rr
    • Gambatte
    • BGB

    VBA-rr

    Gambatte

    BGB

BGB looks like the original to me. The second picture is GB Color OR more likely the Super GameBoy colour tint swap. The black-white image looks like one of the Super GameBoy colours as well.

All emulators are set to default settings. The Gambatte appears to be displaying the game in Super Game Boy mode even though there's no setting for that in the emulator... it may just do it automatically. But there is a Super Game Boy mode setting for VBA-rr and that setting is NOT enabled.

That's great and all but I have owned a Super GameBoy since the hardware's release and I'm shooting from the hip here. Fuck the emulators.

Why is every Original Game Boy ROM for VBA-rr displayed in true black & white? So you're saying that VBA-rr uses Super Game Boy mode for all it's Original Game Boy games? And I can't find a way to disable the true Black & White on VBA-rr.

I agree that BGB is actually pretty close. But if you want the closest to the actual experience, it doesn't cost much money to just go with the actual experience.

I don't know how much justice these images do, but here. I have two DMG's, one with a white backlight and one in it's original form.

You have to remember that the original gameboy screen was dot-matrix. The actual dots were shades of gray, but the film behind it gave the dmg it's (in)famous spinach color.

So all three of us think BGB is the closest.

As for the other issue of VBA-rr, I don't understand why it automatically uses Super Game Boy mode regardless of what setting the user chooses. The GB games are always in true black & white, which Rune has said is the Super Game Boy mode. I don't know why the VBA team has different mode settings when they don't do anything because regardless what you choose, it's always going to be in true black & white (Super Game Boy mode.)

But if you want the closest to the actual experience, it doesn't cost much money to just go with the actual experience.
Yeah I know. If I was into handhelds more, I'd purchase it. But I'm not really into those systems. I don't stray far from the Atari 2600, NES, SNES, and Genesis. And all 4 of them I own the real console.

Most game boy games were monochrome. The super game boy is a peripheral for the SNES that allows you to play game boy games on it. Since the SNES can show color, a handful of games after the release of the SGB had color palettes for it, allowing it to have color when playing on the SGB.

If you used the nointro sets instead of the outdated good sets, you would see the SGB tags in the filenames.

The SGB guessed at colors for the older monochrome only games. There was an option on the SGB to switch different palettes so you could play your games with different color schemes.

The black-white setting also originated from the hardware side -- it was the GameBoy Micro's colour scheme.

The actual games didn't have any colors. That green/yelllow/gray tint was given by the portable's screen. So there's no "real" color.

If you're playing on the original brick GB, then the games look green/yellowish. If you're playing on a GB Pocket, the games will look gray/silver. On the Super Gameboy they will look Black & white (assuming there are no enhancements). The reason why the games look B&W on the SGB is because those are the real colors, or lack thereof, and there's no portable screen tinting the games.

Here's a somewhat heated discussion about what colors should GB games be.

                      It started here:

                      And ended here:
                      http://hg101.proboards.com/index.cgi...ay&thread=9036

My opinion is that they are black & white, a blank canvas for any color to be applied. Although, Nintendo's official GB screenshots are yellow, like No$GB's default color.

                        GoodSets do use SGB tags.
