  • Extracting STR's from disc?

I don't mean to convert them to another format but what guaranteed method can be used to extract them off the disc to be viewed within a player or reburn't to another disc at a later period, I'm guessing the proper method is to have the filesize exactly the same as the original file.
IsoBuster has various extraction methods none of them seems to be right

    For example ROSCOE.STR from SCED-00820

Extract - 19,322,880 bytes warns of errors during extraction.
Extract RAW but convert to user data - 20,784,676 bytes
Extract but FILTER only M2F2 Mpeg Frames - Always ends up as 0 byte file, I guess that's correct though.
    Extract RAW Data (2352 bytes/block) - 23,670,528 bytes

    20,611,072 bytes extracted with UltraISO.
    23,670,572 bytes extracted with CDmage.

I rebuilt a AR v4.2 disc with it containing the extracted str's using it's media browser and it could only play the one extracted with UltraISO it didn't have any sound playback though.

This is the option to use on Isobuster, but it may not work on all discs due to other issues: Extract RAW Data (2352 bytes/block) - 23,670,528 bytes

I suspect the issue you're having is with the rebuilding stage. You need to make sure the str files are correctly rewritten as mode 2/xa 2352 bytes per sector data... Otherwise some of the data will be missing. Also, not all videos have the audio track in the same file.

If you'd like to test if the videos were ripped correctly, this program should be of use: http://kenai.com/projects/jpsxdec/pages/Home

Yeah but that option produces files that are bigger than the original file which imo makes no sense the orginal size is 20,611,072 bytes the same as one extracted with UltraISO and when I click the properties in IsoBuster it also shows the same size as well as when I mounted the SCED-00820 ISO with Deamon Tools.
The pc players i've tried also give conflcting results PSXTulz, STRPlay, PSMplay they'll play in one but not the other so I don't know what to trust, I suppose the only one I could really trust is Sony's Movie Convertor but it only works on windows 9x.
Sorry if this is coming over as being ungrateful but I need a a definitive answer.

Yeah, they're supposed to be larger than the visible file size. The data on a playstation CD is 2048 bytes per sector unless it's an xa or str file, where the files are 2352 bytes per sector. That's why you can't just copy those files off a disc without doing odd things.

As far as playing goes... There aren't any good players. Even sony's own software for handling these types of files is extremely low quality when it'll even work at all.

Thanks for the help, when so say "You need to make sure the str files are correctly rewritten as mode 2/xa 2352 bytes per sector data... Otherwise some of the data will be missing. " does that mean I need to make a mode2/form1/2352 image? i've verfied that the str also contains the audio part.
As far as i'm aware ps2gen only allows you to make mode1/2048 images the only app I know of that can do Mode2/Form1/2352 images is ImgBurn, if I make a image with ImgBurn using that option will it stop other files from being read that'd normally be 2048? and will I be able to patch the image with a license? or does the ps1 use some kind of 2048/2352 hybrid?
