    An Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

    Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr. <[email protected]>

    Senator Bob Casey's e-newsletter

    Dear Dlevere:

I know there's a lot of concern right now about the spread of the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, in Pennsylvania and across the country, so I'm reaching out to address your concerns and ensure you have the accurate information you need to protect yourself and your loved ones.

My main priority first and foremost is to protect families and communities within the Commonwealth. As of March 13, Pennsylvania has 41 presumed positive cases of COVID-19. I want to let you know my office is closely monitoring the situation and has been in direct contact with federal, state and local government and public health officials to ensure Pennsylvania receives all necessary resources to keep our communities safe and prepared. In Washington, I worked with my colleagues to pass an emergency funding bill that includes significant resources for Pennsylvania, including at least $16.9 million for public health emergency preparedness activities. I have been focused on calling attention to the additional steps I believe we need to take to mitigate harm for those who are most at risk, such as older adults and people with disabilities. And I will continue to support localities in Pennsylvania that have announced decisive measures to keep their communities safe, like canceling large events and encouraging employees to telework when possible.

Public health experts have indicated that the new coronavirus is spreading more rapidly in the United States, and have emphasized the steps that people should take regardless of whether they are at heightened risk for the disease. Currently, the best advice for protecting your health remains to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth; disinfect frequently-touched objects and practice appropriate social distancing. Individuals at higher risk should consider limiting time spent outside the home.

Your public health officials are here to help. The Pennsylvania Health Department will continue to keep Pennsylvanians updated on state response efforts and have made available different resources and emergency planning guidance. These are available at Health.PA.Gov, by calling 1-877-PA-HEALTH or by following their social media pages @PAHealthDept. Additional information and resources can be found at CDC.Gov/Coronavirus. If you are traveling, please take care to heed the warnings from the State Department.

My office is also adjusting its operations in the interest of protecting the health and safety of my constituents and my staff. The House and Senate Sergeant at Arms have ordered limited access throughout the United States Capitol complex from 5:00 PM on March 12 through 8:00 AM on April 1, 2020. As a result, my Washington staff will be working remotely and independently to serve the people of the Commonwealth, and all official business will be conducted by e-mail, phone or video conference. Out of an abundance of caution, my offices in Pennsylvania have also transitioned to virtual meetings and are not able to offer in-person meetings or drop-bys, but will be open and responding to constituent needs and requests. If you have any questions or comments that do not require you to speak with a member of my staff, please feel free to contact my office online and we will respond as quickly as possible. I will continue to re-evaluate the steps my office is taking to ensure everyone's safety, and will make additional changes as necessary.

As we learn more about the coronavirus, I urge all Pennsylvanians to follow the instructions of their medical providers, public health professionals and federal agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The people of Pennsylvania wish a speedy recovery to those who have contracted COVID-19, and we stand ready to help those patients and families through this challenging time.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact my office online or call your local office in Pennsylvania, and we will respond as quickly as possible.

The U.K.’s Glastonbury music festival has been canceled in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Festival organizers confirmed Wednesday morning that the 50th edition of the iconic fest, which was set to take place from June 24-28, would have to be called off. It will return in 2021.

This year’s headline acts included Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar, while Diana Ross, Fatboy Slim, Dua Lipa, Primal Scream and the Manic Street Preachers were also slated to perform. The fest had been bullish about plans to go ahead despite coronavirus fears until as late as last week, when it added a number of performers to the line-up. Its full line-up was to be unveiled in May.

80 COVID-19 cases connected to Smithfield Foods in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - State officials say over 80 employees at one Sioux Falls business have tested positive for COVID-19.

South Dakota Health Secretary Kim Malsam-Rysdon said Wednesday that over 80 employees at Smithfield Foods have been diagnosed with the disease.

Malsam-Rysdon said Smithfield is one of the businesses the Department of Health has identified as a "hot spot." She said health officials are working closely with the business to make sure they are following the proper guidelines.

              Original story

The mayor of Sioux Falls says several Sioux Falls businesses, including Smithfield Foods, are working with the South Dakota Department of Health to slow the spread of COVID-19.

In a briefing Wednesday, Mayor Paul TenHaken said the state Department of Health has identified several COVID-19 "hot spots" in Minnehaha County.

While TenHaken initially refrained from identifying a particular business or organization, when asked about Smithfield Foods, TenHaken confirmed it is one of the businesses the state is working with.

Smithfield Foods previously confirmed an employee tested positive for COVID-19. Dakota News Now has received reports of additional cases at the meat processing plant. The company has declined to comment on any of these additional cases.

TenHaken said the city has been working closely with Smithfield, and he has personally been emailing the plant manager regarding the situation. He also said Smithfield CEO Kenneth Sullivan has personally visited the plant to make sure proper measures are being taken.

The mayor said Smithfield is not the only company dealing with the coronavirus, saying he has contacted the CEO of another unnamed production company that is dealing with COVID-19. TenHaken said he reached out after his office received questions from employees regarding the company's policies.

Smithfield has posted guidelines to its website regarding the company's policies regarding COVID-19. Those guidelines state employees who test positive will be quarantined with pay. The company also says it is providing a $500 "Responsibility Bonus" to all its hourly production and distribution team members.

Smithfield Foods, the site of the former John Morrell plant, is one of Sioux Falls' largest employers, with more than 3,500 employees.

On April 20, more than 40 factory workers in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, cheered each other on as they clocked out after having lived at the facility for 28 straight days.

As 6 ABC reports, the employees had volunteered to eat and sleep at the Braskem America factory, where they worked 12 hour shifts to produce polypropylene, a non-woven fiber used to manufacture sanitary wipes and personal protective equipment like N95 masks and hospital gowns.

“There’s been a glow in everyone’s eyes today, I’ll say,” operations shift supervisor Joe Boyce told 6 ABC, later adding, “All the first responders, all the people on the front lines, we thank you. That’s what makes our job easy to do.”

2:49 A.M.: CDC updates list of coronavirus symptoms

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has added six new possible symptoms of the novel coronavirus.

People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. These symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus:

                            • Fever

                            • Cough

                            • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

                            • Chills

                            • Repeated shaking with chills

                            • Muscle pain

                            • Headache

                            • Sore throat

                            • New loss of taste or smell

It had previously only noted fever, cough and shortness of breath as possible symptoms of COVID-19.

Well nowadays I am so used to walk in a face mask and gloves I don't even remember how it was without it before. I am living in my real estate in Cannes and France is starting to come out of quarantine gradually. We can do sports outside now and soon will be able to visit restaurants but sit only outside and with a distance.
