There are two hacks of NES Legend Of Zelda now found on Romhacking Dot Net: Zelda III: Wrath of Ganon by retrogamer 76 & The Legend Of Zelda: Return Of Ganon by Hynes 357.
If you enjoyed (or still enjoy) the original LOZ, you'll certainly enjoy both these hacks. Both have entirely-redesigned Overworlds & dungeons, with a slight increase in the number of enemies. However, gameplay is same as in the original, so you don't have to learn everything from scratch. Basically, they're the original LOZ, completely redesigned & made harder, but not impossible.
While the sprites have been slightly upgraded, they still retain their original colors, etc. The fault I've found with many LOZ hacks is that they've added annoying color & sprite changes that can become eyesores in a short time. Thankfully, these two hacks don't have that!
basically, these hacks are variations of the original game, but you'll have to shove every rock, bomb every wall, & burn every reachable bush to discover the locations of all the dungeons & all the other secrets in each of these hacks.
And, BTW, all the codes that work in the original work in these hacks!
