  • 1st Human Case Of Rat Hepatitis E Detected In Hong Kong

    Hepatitis E

Hepatitis E is inflammation of the liver caused by infection with the hepatitis E virus. It is one of five known human hepatitis viruses: A, B, C, D, and E.

HEV is a positive-sense, single-stranded, nonenveloped, RNA icosahedral virus; HEV has a fecal-oral transmission route.

Infection with this virus was first documented in 1955 during an outbreak in New Delhi, India. A preventive vaccine is approved for use in China.

A 56 year old man from Hong Kong has developed the world's first human case of rat hepatitis E.

Researchers say it is unclear how the man contracted the virus, but refuse bins outside his home were infested with rats.

There had been no previous evidence that this strain of the virus could be transmitted to humans.

The human version of hepatitis E is usually spread through contaminated drinking water.
