While I worked as a cop, I had someone try to pull a similar stunt with me. I received a call to a local business about a man's having locked his keys in his vehicle & requesting me to bring an unlocking device. When I approached the man & car, I ran the car's license tag & it came back to a woman. When I told him that, he said it was his girlfriend, so I asked him her name & he told me something different.

    BINGO!

His scheme dawned on me! I cuffed/stuffed him none-too-gently & asked another officer who'd come by to watch him while I went into the business & found the car's owner. She said she had a faulty ignition switch & the key had become stuck in it, so she had left it alone & locked/unlocked the car with another key. She also didn't know the man who'd tried to take the car. Off to the Crossbar Hilton he went for 3 months.

Yes, he ALMOST made a fool outts me. (I don't need any help in THAT dept!)
