They didn't say the exact cause, but it's likely drugs since that seems to get everyone. All I can think of is Black Hole Sun and the entertaining commentary from Beavis and Butthead watching the music video. The demos from Audioslave were interesting too when those were around, Show Me How To Live had a uniquely different chorus in the demo. I've never heard a vocalist with a comparable voice, the closest I've ever heard was a band called Operator with their track called Soulcrusher where their vocalist seems slightly similar, but otherwise nothing else has ever been close to the same as Chris Cornell.
