  • The Sega Mega Drive returns – retro console making a BIG comeback

MAJOR retailer sees sales surge by 400% as gamers rush to grab the 80's console.

It was the console that took the 80's by storm and now it's doing the same in 2015.

According to Argos, a retro version of the Sega Mega Drive is flying off shelves with gaming fans flocking to buy the $74.55 USD machine.

Originally released in 1988, the Mega Drive was a massive success with games such Sonic the Hedgehog becoming must-have titles.

The console sold in excess of 30 million units before being discontinued in 1997.

The latest version of the classic console features 80 built-in games which can be played on any standard TV.

It's also fully compatible with all SEGA Mega Drive cartridges if you happen to have any in your loft.

"There's a real appetite for nostalgia at the moment, whether it is firing up old consoles, or dusting down old vinyl records." said Laura Hamblyn, gift buyer at Argos.

"The Sega Mega Drive is fondly remembered by the 90's generation who would spend hours helping Sonic The Hedgehog to defeat his arch nemesis Doctor Robotnik.

"It is fantastic to see parents buying this console to relive their childhood and introduce their own kids to some old school gaming."

Retro gaming has become big business in recent years.

80's consoles and games have been making a big comeback with the ZX Spectrum the most recent addition to the list.

The Recreated ZX Spectrum finally hit UK stores earlier this year having raised over $91,285.10 USD via a Kickstarter campaign.

With identical styling to the original, including the famous rubber keys, the device has all the classic features with hi-tech twist.

The $136.93 USD machine allows Spectrum fans to play a back catalog of over 10,000 8-bit Spectrum games.
