  • New World of Warcraft Update lays groundwork for WoW Tokens

    By GamePolitics Staff

Blizzard is set to release a new update to its still-popular MMORPG World of Warcraft today that should lay the groundwork for a new way of in-game financing called WoW Tokens.

WoW Tokens allow players to "securely exchange" in-game gold and game time. The new system will be released a few weeks after this week's update, according to what Blizzard has said publicly. It will be deployed in Latin America, North America and Oceania first.

The $20 WoW Tokens will sell for "roughly equivalent in each local currency," according to Blizzard, though the starting price is designed to fluctuate.

The new system goes along with Blizzard's plan to offer players a non-subscription-based option for World of Warcraft. WoW Tokens will be part of that new model by letting players purchase them with real-world money and also sell them to other players via the in-game auction house. Those holding WoW Tokens can redeem them for 30 days of game time.
