  • Uncover Early Versions Of Duke Nukem 3D

    By Cauterize

After buying 3D Realms in March, Interceptor Entertainment has been rooting through the archives it acquired to get more of an idea on the company's history. In doing so, a plethora of unfinished and unreleased titles from both the 3D Realms and Apogee days have been discovered, many of which could be released to the public in the near future.

Earlier this week Interceptor's CEO Frederik Schreiber logged on to his website's forum to share a selection of early concept art for Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem 3D. This consisted of alternate logos and early box art, however, this was only the beginning of their discoveries.

Further into the thread Schreiber started, it was unveiled that an early version of Shadow Warrior featuring different levels and graphic styles had been found. Screenshots of the game in action were also posted, along with contents of the game's directory. Less than half an hour later, Schreiber returned to note that he had discovered early builds of Duke Nukem 3D from every month and year in the run up to the game's release. The thread continued to deliver as the next batch of screenshots which arrived were those of the cancelled Duke Nukem release, Endangered Species.

Instead of just teasing the site's users with these snaps, Schreiber went on to state that he has enlisted the help of some regulars to help preserve these long lost files. As many of these currently reside in password protected archive with various source assets they don't own the rights to, Interceptor is now hoping to get inside and clean up the contents before releasing it to the public.

If there was any doubt about the authenticity of these discoveries, one of the users currently working alongside Schreiber posted a sneak peek video of an early Duke Nukem 3D build on YouTube for all to see.

Needless to say, we're rather excited (from a preservationist point of view) that we could soon be enjoying the unseen side to 3D Realms' past.
